Job Description
Must demonstrate competency in handling emergencies utilizing all Basic and Advanced Life Support equipment and possess skills in accordance with all behavioral objectives in the DOT/EMT-Basic, EMT-I, and EMT-P curriculum and the FEMA document entitled “Recognizing and Identifying Hazardous Materials”. EMT 1994 curriculum includes objectives pertaining to the use of the pneumatic anti-shock garment, automated external defibrillator, epinephrine auto-injector and inhaler bronchodilators.

Test will be administered for verification of skills proficiency and applicants must achieve a passing score on the written certification examination.

Qualifications
· Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
· Possess a high school education or GED equivalent.
· Be certified through the Texas Department of Health (TDH) and have successfully completed an approved course.
· Must use good judgment and remain calm in high-stress situations.
· Must be able to read English language manuals and road maps to accurately discern street signs and address numbers.
· Must be able to communicate effectively, via telephone and radio equipment with co-workers, hospital staff, family members, and bystanders to obtain and provide relevant information.
· Must be able to effectively document, in writing, all relevant information in prescribed format in light of legal ramifications.
· Must be able to lift, carry, and balance up to 125 lbs or 250 lbs with assistance.
· Must exhibit the ability to interpret written, oral and diagnostic form instructions and to calculate weight and volume ratios under life threatening time constraints.
· Must be able to bend, stoop, and crawl on uneven terrain and to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture.
· Must be able to perform all roles, and responsibilities prescribed to an EMT-Paramedic in the State of Texas in accordance with Chapter 773, Emergency Medical Services of the Texas Health and Safety Code, and the DOT EMT-Paramedic National Standard curriculum.

Description of Tasks
Receives call from SCA dispatcher and responds to emergency calls. Reads road maps and may drive ambulance to the emergency site using the most expeditious route while observing traffic ordinances and regulations. May extricate a patient from an entrapment. Assesses the extent of injury to the patient and uses prescribed techniques and appliances. Radios dispatcher for additional assistance or services when necessary.

Assesses the nature and extent of illness or injury to patient and renders appropriate emergency care (based on competency level). Takes pulse and blood pressure while visually observing for changes in skin color. Determines patient status and establishes priority for emergency care. May administer intravenous drugs or fluid replacement as director by physician. Uses equipment (based on competency level), such as but not limited to an automated external defibrillator (AED), defibrillator, electrocardiograph, and may perform endotracheal intubation to open airways and ventilate patient. Complies with regulations in the handling of deceased. Notifies authorities and arranges for protection of property and evidence at scene.

Assists in the lifting, carrying, and transportation of a patient to an ambulance and on to a medical facility. Reassures the patient, family members, and bystanders. Avoids the mishandling of patient and undue haste. Determines the appropriate facility to which patient will be transported. Reports nature and extent of injuries or illness to that facility. Asks for direction from hospital physician or emergency department. Observes patient enroute and administers care as directed by physician or emergency department according to published protocol. Identifies diagnostic signs that require communication with facility. Assists in removing the patient from the ambulance and transporting the patient into the emergency facility. Reports verbally and in writing, observations about and care of the patient at the scene and enroute to the facility while providing assistance to emergency staff as required.

Replaces supplies and sends used supplies for sterilization. Decontaminates the vehicle interior and checks all equipment for future readiness. Keeps the ambulance to in an operable condition by maintaining fuel level, checking the oil, the water in battery and radiator, and tire pressure.

Upon employment offer all candidates will be subject to system certification to practice evaluation, consisting of modular reviews of performance, and knowledge base without which candidates would not be able to achieve individual clearance to practice.
