BASICS, INTERMEDIATES AND PARAMEDICS


JOB PURPOSE
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are generally responsible for administering Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Life Support (ALS), including medical monitoring and/or other treatment to sick or injured persons that are being transported via ambulance.



DUTIES
An EMT’s essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Receives call from dispatcher, responds verbally to emergency calls, reads maps, drives ambulance to emergency site, utilizing most expeditious route and observes all traffic ordinances and regulations.
Determines nature and extent of illness/injury, takes vitals, visually observes changes in patient mental/physical aspects, makes determination regarding patient status, establishes priority for emergency care, renders appropriate emergency care, based upon certification level and following established protocols.
Assists in lifting, carrying and transporting patient to ambulance and on to a medical facility.
Administers intravenous drugs/fluid replacement, uses defibrillator and electrocardiograph, may perform endotracheal intubation to open airways and ventilate patient, based upon certification level and following established protocols, or as directed by a hospital physician or emergency room department.
Determines appropriate facility to which patient will be transported. Communicates a report identifying diagnostic signs and the nature and extent of illness/injuries to that facility and asks for direction from hospital physician or emergency room department. Observes patient enroute and administers care, based upon certification level and following established protocols, or as directed by a hospital physician or emergency room department.
Assists in removing patient from ambulance and into emergency room department. Reports, verbally and in writing, to receiving nurse or doctor observations about and care of patient at the scene and enroute to receiving facility.
Provides assistance to emergency staff as required.
Maintains familiarity with all EMT ambulance equipment.
Is responsible in obtaining continuing education units and training necessary in order to maintain EMT certification level.


SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
EMTs must be certified in the State of Ohio as an EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic and have a current certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Paramedics must have ACLS.
EMTs MUST BE 21 YEARS OF AGE and a high school graduate or equivalent.
EMTs must have proof of valid driver’s license and be insurable under the company’s auto liability insurance policy.
EMTs must be able to pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and criminal background checks.
EMTs must be able to interpret and respond to written, oral and diagnostic form instructions. This includes reading maps, street signs/address number and medication/prescription labels.
EMTs must be able to communicate verbally via telephone and radio equipment. This also includes be able to communicate verbally with patients and family/significant others in diverse cultural and age groups; also includes knowledge and implementation of HIPPA laws.
EMTs must possess good manual dexterity with ability to perform all tasks related to advance emergency patient care and documentation.
EMTs must be able to lift, carry and balance up to 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance); bend, stoop, and crawl on uneven terrain; withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold and moisture.
